How do I design a logo and brand identity?
Design here means hierarchy, type, and a small set of decisions you can repeat. A logo is not a brand, and decoration is not a system.
Graphic design, for a beginner, is hierarchy and repetition. The reader should see the most important words first, then the next action, then the detail. A logo is one piece of a brand. It is not the brand. Color, type, and spacing that you can repeat matter more than a single clever mark.
Start with the words. If the headline is vague, no typeface will save it. Write what the thing is, who it is for, and what to do next. Then make that headline the largest element. Everything else gets quieter.
Limit the system. One or two typefaces. A small set of colors that still work in grayscale. The same spacing on every page or post. A brand people recognize is a brand that does not change its mind every week.
Tools such as Canva, Figma, or any editor are optional. The Free plan of a design tool is enough to learn alignment, contrast, and export. Check the current price before you subscribe, because plans differ by country and tax. Use images you have a license for. A client’s logo is their property.
Accessibility is part of the design, not a later polish. Small gray text on a photo fails for many readers. Check contrast and do not put the only copy of the message inside an image if a screen reader should read it.
Practice on real jobs, even small ones: a class poster, a shop sign, a thumbnail, a one-page flyer. Write the purpose on the file name. Compare the first version with the second after you remove one color and one font. The quieter version is usually the more professional one.
The Canva tutorial and the photo-editing guides are the practical next pages. They do not replace the decisions on this hub. Open the tool only after the headline is written.
What you will learn
- Write the headline and the next action before you open a tool.
- Make the headline the largest element.
- Choose one typeface and a small color set.
- Check that the design still works in black and white.
- Export the size the destination actually needs.
Frequently asked questions
How do I design a logo as a beginner?
Start with the name in a clear typeface. Add a simple mark only if it still works at a tiny size. A logo is not a detailed illustration.
What is a brand identity?
The repeated choices: type, color, spacing, and tone. A logo without those choices is a picture, not an identity.
Which app should I use?
Any app that lets you set type, alignment, and export. Learn the decisions first. The tool is replaceable.
How do I know the design is readable?
Squint at it. If you cannot see what matters, the hierarchy is wrong. Also check color contrast and the size on a phone.
Can I use any photo from the internet?
No. Use photos you made, photos the client supplied, or assets whose license allows your use. Read the license, including whether commercial use is included.
Do design rules change by country?
The craft is global. Symbols, colors, and reading direction are cultural. Arabic and Urdu layouts need right-to-left type. Test with a reader from the audience, not only with your own taste.
Should I use Canva or Figma?
Canva for a poster or a social post. Figma for a screen or a set of layouts you will reuse. Both have a free start. Read the current price on the company's own site before you pay.
