How should I build internal links?

An internal link connects one page on your site to another. Good internal linking helps a reader continue learning and helps search engines discover URLs and understand relationships between topics.

Start with the pages that matter most. Give each important guide links from relevant hub pages and from other guides where the connection is genuinely useful. Avoid adding a giant list of unrelated links just to increase link counts.

Use descriptive anchor text. 'Learn technical SEO' tells a reader what the destination is; 'click here' does not. Keep the surrounding sentence natural and make the relationship between the two pages obvious.

Think in clusters. A broad SEO guide can link to search intent, keyword research, on-page SEO, technical SEO, and measurement. Each detailed guide can then link back to the hub and forward to the next useful concept.

Audit for orphan pages: important URLs that have no useful internal links pointing to them. If a page matters enough to publish, it usually deserves a clear place in the site's navigation or content network.

Frequently asked questions

What is an internal link?

A link from one page on your site to another. It helps people and search engines move to the next useful page.

How many internal links should a page have?

Enough to offer the next step. A pile of unrelated links is not better. Link the pages that continue the same task.

What should the link text say?

Say what the next page is about. "Click here" tells nobody. The page title or a short description is enough.

Do footer links replace links in the article?

No. A link in the paragraph, where the reader needs it, is clearer than a list of every page in the footer.

Can internal links fix a weak page?

They help discovery. They do not replace an answer. The destination still has to be worth opening.

Should I link to other websites too?

Yes when an official source supports a fact. Leaving your site is normal. It is not a loss if the link is useful.
